This webpage contains an activity that allows users to guide a charged object, or "puck", through a maze using the electric field created by point charges placed by the user. Options exist to control the mass and sign of the charge of the puck. There are four levels of difficulty that change the barrier placement. Barriers do not affect the fields, only define the path of the puck. The user can view a vector representation of the electric field, as well as trace the path of the puck. After each attempt the user may move the existing charge or place more charges and try again. This activity gives users an immediate experience with the interaction between fields and charges.
The page also contains samples of learning goals as well as user-submitted ideas and activities for use with the simulation. This simulation is part of a large and growing collection. It has been designed using principles from physics education research and refined based on student interviews. Please note that this resource requires at least version 1.4, Java WebStart of Java.
