This interactive homework problem involves a small ball suspended by a string in a uniform, horizontal electric field with a magnitude of 10^3 N/C.  Presuming the ball is in equilibrium when the string makes a 30 ° angle with the vertical, the user is asked to find the net charge on the ball.  This problem is accompanied by a Socratic-dialog "help" sequence designed to encourage critical thinking as users do a guided conceptual analysis before attempting the mathematics.  Immediate feedback for both correct and incorrect responses is provided through each step of the problem-solving.
