American Journal of Physics
written by Laurence Viennot
This paper points out some general tendencies of physics experts in analyzing students' mistakes. We illustrate these tendencies with two instances in the field of mechanics. It is shown that frequently in interpreting students' comments, experts proceed in terms of the accepted theory, and thus may fail to discern some important aspects of spontaneous reasoning. These aspects are illustrated with results obtained at college level.
