Laurence Viennot and Sylvie Rainson
An analysis of the difficulties experienced by students when applying the principle of superposition to electric fields is first presented. Two main obstacles are illustrated: the students' needs for an effect to accept the existence of a field, and a causal interpretation of some relationships. An experimental sequence aiming at overcoming the latter obstacle is described. The evaluation, on the basis of "conceptual profiles," is also presented.
