American Journal of Physics
written by George Barnes and George Bruce Barnes
This paper reports the results of a study designed to measure any change in the Piagetian level of intellectual functioning of students in introductory physics classes over a period of one semester. The classes selected for the study contained students in premedical and engineering physics. Using the most powerful appropriate statistical test, no significant change was found, although there was a tendency for the pre-course scores to be slightly higher than the post-course scores. Furthermore, changes in scores considerably greater than those observed would not have been statistically significant.
