The importance of "critical thinking" in physics education has been frequently discussed, debated, and analyzed. Despite recognition of the need to develop critical reasoning skills, students continue to be assessed primarily on their knowledge of physics content. Only recently have science educators started moving systematically toward achieving and assessing this critical thinking goal. In this paper we seek to show how guiding students to devise and test multiple explanations of observed phenomena can be used to improve their critical thinking.
