This module explores complex fluids, mixtures that have characteristics of more than one phase of matter. It features a video of cornstarch "coming to life" -- when combined with water, the resulting mixture becomes a non-Newtonian fluid with properties of both a solid and a liquid, depending on the amount of pressure or force applied to it. In a related hands-on activity, learners make a polymer called "Gak" from borax powder, glue, and water. The experiment is a springboard for teaching about polymers, long-chained molecules consisting of smaller repeating molecule units (known as monomers).

4. The Physical Setting

4D. The Structure of Matter
  • 6-8: 4D/M1cd. Atoms may link together in well-defined molecules, or may be packed together in crystal patterns. Different arrangements of atoms into groups compose all substances and determine the characteristic properties of substances.
  • 6-8: 4D/M11. Substances react chemically in characteristic ways with other substances to form new substances with different characteristic properties.
  • 9-12: 4D/H7b. An enormous variety of biological, chemical, and physical phenomena can be explained by changes in the arrangement and motion of atoms and molecules.

8. The Designed World

8B. Materials and Manufacturing
  • 6-8: 8B/M6. Some materials, such as plastics, are synthesized in chemical reactions that link atoms together in long chains. Plastics can be designed to have a variety of different properties for a variety of uses.
