This short video discusses how metals present in acid drainage will separate out of solution to pollute water and pose a danger for drinking. In this case, investigators discuss the water near an abandoned coal mine in Eastern Kentucky. Although the water appears clean, it is too acidic to support life, and will threaten aquatic organisms in a river further downstream.

4. The Physical Setting

4D. The Structure of Matter
  • 6-8: 4D/M4. The temperature and acidity of a solution influence reaction rates. Many substances dissolve in water, which may greatly facilitate reactions between them.
  • 6-8: 4D/M10. A substance has characteristic properties such as density, a boiling point, and solubility, all of which are independent of the amount of the substance and can be used to identify it.
  • 6-8: 4D/M11. Substances react chemically in characteristic ways with other substances to form new substances with different characteristic properties.

5. The Living Environment

5D. Interdependence of Life
  • 6-8: 5D/M1b. The world contains a wide diversity of physical conditions, which creates a wide variety of environments: freshwater, marine, forest, desert, grassland, mountain, and others. In any particular environment, the growth and survival of organisms depend on the physical conditions.
  • 9-12: 5D/H3. Human beings are part of the earth's ecosystems. Human activities can, deliberately or inadvertently, alter the equilibrium in ecosystems.
