I would like to know which method the data tool application uses to determine/calculate the area under the curve?

Hi,
Data used by DataTool is basically a polygonal curve made of a collection of points ([i],y[i]). Hence, the area is computed basically by adding up the area of each vertical polygon between x[i] and x[i+1].
If your question was related to whether DataTool used any integration algorithm (such as Simpson's rule)... no, it just uses a polygonal approximation.
