Detail Page

written by Kyle Forinash
This web page contains a simulation of Brownian motion.  One larger particle represents a macroscopically visible object (pollen grain) and smaller particles represent water molecules.  Users may view speed vs. time or kinetic energy vs. time graphs as the particles collide randomly.  Related context-rich questions elicit thinking about how average speed and average kinetic energy are related to object size.  Are the objects in thermal equilibrium?

This page is part of a collection of Java applets with tutorial questions developed for students of undergraduate physics.
