At the Institute for Science Education, a simulation program named xyZET has been developed and combined with an introductory course in mechanics to demonstrate its usefulness in teaching and learning physics. One of its distinct features enables the visualization of the movement of interacting particles in 3D. It adds value to teaching and learning complex processes, where visualization can help reduce cognitive load. The program can be used during lectures, where a simulation can often speak for itself in place of verbal explanation. The program also supports the development of exercise material for individualized learning. Such material in the form of Web pages can be combined with xyZET simulations, controlled by applets. Its basic features are discussed.
