This interactive applet simulates the forces acting on a vertically moving block. The block is supported by springs that, in turn, are resting on a platform. Users control velocity and acceleration, allowing them to learn about the normal force and how to use Newton's Second Law to calculate the normal force on a vertically accelerating object. This item is part of a module that includes a detailed lesson with related problems/solutions, learning outcomes, and instructions for use.
This item is part of a larger collection of physics simulations sponsored by the MAP project (Modular Approach to Physics).
