This website, from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, provides a 1933 time-lapse photograph of a high-voltage electric discharge emitted by a Van de Graff generator.  The research applications that drove the development of this apparatus are described along with the technique used to generate such high voltages.  An image gallery provides additional photographs of the large structure.  Also provided are links to Van de Graff's original papers.
