This interactive problem presents an airplane just after liftoff which is traveling at a known airspeed and with a headwind of known velocity. The flight trajectory is also given. The task: figure out the speed of the airplane relative to the ground. The math is not difficult, but the problem is not as easy as it first appears. As with all Illinois PER Examples, the author takes learners through each step of conceptual analysis and strategic problem-solving. This resource is part of a larger collection of interactive problems developed by the Illinois Physics Education Research Group. See Related Materials for a link to the full collection.
