This article reviews the history, theories and contributions that led Albert Einstein to formulate the theories of Special and General Relativity. It starts from the understanding of gravity by the ancient Greek Mathematicians, and ends at the work by Einstein and others in the early 20th century. Hyperlinks are available to biographies of all the important scientists and mathematicians who contributed to the theory. This is part of the extensive MacTutor History of Mathematics Archive.
