"Fundamentals of Physics" is probably the best book on introductory physics there is.

I heard someone say the other day that this book (Halliday, Resnick, etc.) has a wide diversity in its accompanying photos, while Giancoli is lacking in this regard...

Has anyone else sensed this in using these books, or does anyone know where one might find some data about this?

It has some great explanations and shows the long way of everything it is great if you are a why does this work person when you learn a new concept. I like being able to read through the proofs, personally. It also has awesome problems to work, that help prepare you for physics and real world application.

I also had this

It's a fair text.  The best thing, for me, were the concept
questions.  As for the HW problems... *shrugs*  They were
okay.  For some reason the authors (or author... Walker, I
suspect) are obsessed with penguins.

The other good thing was the Interactive LearningWare.  If
your instructor didn't get it on CD, request it, because it's
slow as Christmas online (even with broadband), but it's
worth it.  The stuff for optics was especially helpful.

The worked problems/examples in the book are sub-par.  In
general the problems are sort of obscure and irrelevent, and
worst of all not helpful for the HW.

Also, the exposition on E&M, especially circuits, is poor.

Overall, though, it's good.  Good illustrations, nice glossy
paper, and the separation into multiple volumes only
sometimes annoying.

I had an older edition of this book years ago.  I still
use it for reference!
