![]() Physics Homework Management: Using Hypercard to Generate Individualized Problem Sets
written by
Hilton Abbott
This article describes a homework-management system being used in the physics department at Springfield Technical Community College in Massachusetts. This system generates and scores homework, and was designed with several goals in mind. It was created to generate homework sets for entire classes in such a way that each class member would get a unique problem set. Each problem set was to be "graded" by the computer at the convenience of the student, and the student was to be allowed to check each homework problem several times. Class access to problem sets was to be controlled by the teacher, and record keeping was to be automatic. Perhaps the most important feature of this homework-management system is its ability to create individualized problem sets. An entire class gets the same problem text, but the numbers in the problems are unique for each student. This uniqueness feature virtually eliminates "copying," while the common text encourages cooperative problem solving.
