This page from the Institute of Physics provides resources developed specifically to address secondary students' difficulties in understanding how magnetic field is related to patterns they see in common magnetism demonstrations. The authors suggest starting with a compass needle simulation or demo, rather than using iron filings as the basis for drawing field lines. Five distinct lessons (free access) are available to help students build more sophisticated reasoning about how scientists use patterns (like field line drawings) to help them visualize magnetic fields.

  • Forces that act at a distance (electric, magnetic, and gravitational) can be explained by fields that extend through space and can be mapped by their effect on a test object (a charged object, or a ball, respectively). (6-8)
  • Forces at a distance are explained by fields (gravitational, electric, and magnetic) permeating space that can transfer energy through space. Magnets or electric currents cause magnetic fields; electric charges or changing magnetic fields cause electric fields. (9-12)
