This unique simulation for grades 6-9 provides hands-on practice in exploring mean, mode, and median. It features an interactive Java graphing applet that allows users to add/remove boxes from an axis with a given range. Click above the x axis to "plop" blocks into the desired columns, then watch as the applet displays pointers indicating mode, mean, and median.  Students can also increase/decrease the range of values or input data in a statistical panel to practice constructing computer-generated graphs.

This resource is part of CSERD (Computational Science Education Reference Desk), a portal of the National Science Digital Library. The Interactivate collection contains more than 200 standards-based activities, many of which have been classroom tested.

As one variable increases uniformly, the other may do one of the following: increase or decrease steadily, increase or decrease faster and faster, get closer and closer to some limiting value, reach some intermediate maximum or minimum, alternately increase and decrease, increase or decrease in steps, or do something different from any of these.
