This standards-based module for the middle grades offers an array of online lessons, simulations, and activities to use in constructing a full unit on measurement. It was developed to help teachers provide scaffolding in areas where students often struggle with abstract ideas. It gives links that provide hands-on experiences with measuring, using scale and proportionality, and estimating. Each concept is supported with activities that use real-life applications where students make choices of which tools and units to use in problem solving.

Editor's Note: Of the 25+ links in this module, we discovered that 6 did not work. As a whole, this item meets all other criteria as an exemplary resource for middle school learners.

9. The Mathematical World

9A. Numbers
  • 6-8: 9A/M3b. How a quantity is expressed depends on how precise the measurement is and how precise an answer is needed.
  • 9-12: 9A/H3. When calculations are made with measurements, a small error in the measurements may lead to a large error in the results.
  • 9-12: 9A/H4. The effects of uncertainties in measurements on a computed result can be estimated.

  • 6-8: 9C/M6. The scale chosen for a graph or drawing makes a big difference in how useful it is.
  • 6-8: 9C/M7. For regularly shaped objects, relationships exist between the linear dimensions, surface area, and volume.
  • 6-8: 9C/M10. Geometric relationships can be described using symbolic equations.

  • 6-8: 12B/M3. Calculate the circumferences and areas of rectangles, triangles, and circles, and the volumes of rectangular solids.
  • 6-8: 12B/M7b. Convert quantities expressed in one unit of measurement into another unit of measurement when necessary to solve a real-world problem.
12C. Manipulation and Observation
  • 6-8: 12C/M3. Make accurate measurements of length, volume, weight, elapsed time, rates, and temperature by using appropriate devices.
