Teaching General Relativity to Undergraduates
Jul 20, 2006
7:30 AM - 9:30 PM

Thursday morning talks will cover the basics of General Relativity and approaches to teaching the topics.

Thursday evening talks will explore three General Relativity topics: Global Positioning Systems, Gravitational Radiation, and Black Holes.

8:00 AM - 11:30 AM
Thursday Morning
This session will have three talks and discussions:

Jorge Pullin will review central concepts of general relativity
Jim Hartle will discuss teaching the physics of general relativity first
Tom Moore will discuss teaching the math of general relativity.

Presenter: Jorge Pullin
Presenter: James B. Hartle
Presenter: Thomas A. Moore
11:30 AM - 12:45 PM
Break Out 1
This Break Out Session will consider syllabi for three approaches to Teaching General Relativity:
- Insertion strategies and GR for students with little physics
- Math intense
- Physics first
4:00 PM - 7:45 PM
Thursday Evening
This session will cover topics for teaching General Relativity.
Neil Ashby will discuss GPS
Peter Saulson will discuss gravitational radiation
Don Marolf will discuss black holes

Presenter: Neil Ashby
Presenter: Peter Saulson
Presenter: Donald Marolf
8:00 PM - 9:30 PM
Break Out 2
This Break Out session will identify problems that use GPS, gravitational radiation, and black holes for three levels of courses:
- Insertion strategies
- Math intense
- Physics first
and model syllabi that incorporate these problems.
