Hodgkin-Huxley Model

written by Colin F. C. Thomson

The Hodgkin Huxley Model shows the neuron voltage within the cell of a squid giant axon. This voltage is due to the currents flowing into the neuron and charging the capacitance of the lipid bilayer cell wall. Currents into the neuron are based on sodium and potassium ions flowing into and out of the neuron based on voltage-gates channels in the cell wall. The flow of these ions is determined by dimensionless variables that represent the probability a potassium, sodium activation, or sodium inactivation gate is opened, respectively.  This model allows these parameters to be set by the user.

The Hodgkin Huxley Model was developed using the Easy Java Simulations (EJS) modeling tool.  It is distributed as a ready-to-run (compiled) Java archive.   Double clicking the jar file will run the program if Java is installed.  You can modify this simulation if you have EJS installed by right-clicking within the map and selecting "Open Ejs Model" from the pop-up menu item.
