The UTeach program, begun in 1997 at the University of Texas at Austin, is an innovative mathematics and science teacher preparation program whose success is built, in part, on the collaboration between the College of Natural Sciences and the College of Education. The number of math and science teachers prepared at UT-Austin has doubled during the 11 years of the UTeach program. Characterizing features of the program include aggressive recruitment, employing Master Teachers in instruction and advising, a rigorous curriculum integrating disciplinary and pedagogical study, financial incentives, and a robust collaboration with K-12 school systems. This innovative model is now being replicated at 12 other universities under the auspices of the National Math and Science Initiative.
