Small oscillations of a rolling steel sphere using Tracker

written by Gabriele Tassinari

The purpose of this Tracker experiment is to use a simple device to study the motion of a steel sphere making small oscillations around its equilibrium position as it rolls on a curved plexiglas drawing ruler. The work can be divided into three parts: analysis of the Tracker tab file and associated video; identification of the parameters of the fit equation compatible with the law of time; construction of the dynamic model that better represents the data (graphs and tables).
The student answers questions while analyzing the experiment.
