Description: For the past fourteen years, the Chemistry Department at the University of Kansas has hosted a summer Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) program, funded by the National Science Foundation.  At least 10 to 12 students from the Midwest and across the country engage in a 10-week period of full-time, cutting-edge research.  Students work on their choice from approximately 20 research projects spanning span all areas of chemistry, including bioanalytical chemistry, organometallic chemistry, bioorganic chemistry, biophysical chemistry, theoretical chemistry, and synthesis, to study topics in catalysis, new materials, laser spectroscopy, polymers, and more.  

The KU REU program also includes a weekly seminar program, picnic and other social activities, and a poster session where students present their summer work.  Participants are housed on-campus and form friendships with other summer research students as well as KU undergraduate and graduate students.  Many REU students return to the department at Kansas  for graduate work after they receive their undergraduate degrees.  In addition to the stipend, students receive room and board and one hour of research credit.
