Description: The Nanoscience and Nanotechnology Institute at the University of Iowa (NNI@UI) will host a summer undergraduate research program funded by the National Science Foundation Research Experiences for Undergraduates (NSF-REU) program.   The program will start on May 26, 2009 and will end on July 31, 2009.

Program participants will have the opportunity to work with faculty mentors from the departments of Chemical and Biochemical Engineering, Civil and Environmental Engineering, Chemistry, Pharmacy, and Occupational and Environmental Health. Each mentor will provide an REU student with a cutting edge research project related to one of the three interrelated research themes that comprise the scientific core of this REU program: (i) fundamental studies of nanoparticles and nanomaterials in environmental and health applications; (ii) fundamental studies to better understand the environmental and health implications of nanoparticles; or (iii) instrumentation development for field and laboratory measurements of nanoparticles and nanomaterials.
The REU program provides a $4500 stipend for each participant, campus board and housing plans, and limited funds for travel expenses (up to $500 if necessary). During the REU program, participants will be involved in activities, such as a communicating science workshop, weekly seminars, and a university wide poster session at the end of the program.
Prospective candidates should arrange to have an official transcript and two letters of recommendation (preferably from math, science or engineering professors at their home institution) forwarded to the Program Director at the address below, along with the completed application form ( The deadline for receipt of completed applications is March 1, 2009. Successful candidates will be notified in early April, 2009.
