The Fall 2010 Zone 5 SPS Meeting will take place October 22-23, at Davidson College. This meeting will be joint with the North Carolina Section of the American Association of Physics Teachers (NCS-AAPT).
We have put together a program that will be of interest to students and faculty alike, including a Saturday morning student poster session and a Saturday mini-symposium on astronomy and astronomy education.
Specifically, the SPS program features:
Friday 6-7pm: Pre-Talk/Movie Reception with refreshments and hor d'ourves.
Friday 7-9pm: SPS screening of Star Wars Uncut.
Saturday 8:00-9:30 am: Contributed Talks from North Carolina high school through university faculty on physics education topics.
Saturday 9:30-10:15 am: SPS Student Poster Session and Robotics Demonstrations. Undergraduates from around the North and South Carolina will present posters on their research projects. Several local elementary and high school teachers will demonstrate their robots and be available to discuss workshop opportunities.
Saturday 10:15-11:00 am: Dr. Roger C. Hunter, NASA Project Manager, KEPLER Mission, will speak on NASA's first extra-solar planet (exoplanet) mission to search for earth-sized planets in stars' habitable zones.
Saturday 11:15-12:00 pm: Dr. Edward Prather will talk about his research in Astronomy Education and his efforts towards interactive engagement curricula for astronomy.
Saturday 12-2pm: SPS Lunch with Dr. Roger C. Hunter, NASA Project Manager, KEPLER Mission.
Saturday 2-4pm: SPS Video Conference with Dr. David Saltzberg, science advisor to the television show, The Big Bang Theory.
