Davidson College SPS Chapter
May 9: Jessie Barrick elected to the position of Zone 5 Associate Zone Councilor.
May 1: Voted in SPS Elections.
May 1: Sigma Pi Sigma Inductions, student seminar, and Annual Physics Picnic.
April 27: Stargazing on Chambers Lawn for local area middle school children. We set up 4 telescopes, one of was set up to be similar to Galileo's telescope. We observed Venus, Mars, Moon, and Saturn due to the cloudy conditions. Met at 8:00 pm and event lasted until 10pm.
April 20: SPS Zone Meeting at Wake Forest. We had several students drive to Wake Forest to hear the talk by Nobel Laureate Dr. William Phillips.
April 4: SPS Meeting 8:00 p.m., PCC, Dana Science Building. We will hold officer elections. This is a super opportunity to connect with new students as well as upper class students about SPS. And of course, there will be pizza.
March 24: MOSAIC 10:00am-1:00pm, JV Washam Elementary. We led two classroom groups demonstrating properties of light and sound to over 150 3rd-5th graders.
January 19: SPS Lunch and Meeting with Faculty at the Commons. Meet in Dana lobby at 11:05 and head to the Commons.
November 19: Gave a presentation at the NCS-AAPT SPS Workshop on ComPADRE and the Nucleus.
November 15: SPS Marsh White Award proposal submitted.
November 8: Stargazing on Chambers lawn as part of the Environmental Action Committee's "Do it in the Dark". We set up four telescopes to look at, Jupiter, the Andromeda galaxy, the Great Hercules cluster, the rin nebula, and other star clusters and galaxies. We will also set up a telescope to simulate what Galileo would have seen.
November 1: Davidson College Physics Students joined Facebook. Visit us, like us.
October 31: Haunted Physics Dorms as part of the Davidson College Halloween Extravaganza. Set up boo bubbles, Jacobs ladder, Wimshurst machine, Van de Graaff and other "spooky" apparatus. Met at 5:30 pm at the dorms, the event went from 6-8:00 pm.
October 14: Stargazing at Fisher Farms as part of the Davidson Lands Conservancy World of Wonder Event. We set up 5 telescopes, one of which was set up to be similar to Galileo's telescope. We observed Jupiter, the Andromeda galaxy (M31), the Great Hercules cluster (M13), the Ring nebula (M57), and several other star clusters and galaxies. Met at 7:30 pm at Fisher Farms, the event started at 8:00 pm.
September 29: Davidson College Alumni, Dr. Ben Sargent ('02) of the Space Telescope Science Institute, will talk about "Dusty Origins: The Birth of Stardust."
September 28: Second SPS Meeting of the Semester, 5:30-7:00 p.m., PCC, Dana Science Building. This is a super opportunity to connect with new students as well as upper class students about SPS. And of course, there will be pizza.
September 8: "What I did on My Summer Vacation" Seminars. Summer research talks by Davidson undergraduates: Anna Smith, Chris Cirenza, and Ree Lightsey.

August 31: First SPS Meeting of the Semester, 6:30-8:00 p.m., PCC, Dana Science Building. This is a super opportunity to connect with new students as well as upper class students about SPS. We really hope to get you all acquainted with what we do as a society and what we hope to accomplish over the coming year, as well as get to know our newer members. And of course, there will be pizza.
August 23: Davidson College Activities Fair from 5:30-7:30 p.m., on Chambers Lawn. This is a super opportunity to connect with new students as well as upper class students about SPS.
