Website Detail Page

published by the PhET
This webpage contains an interactive simulation
that allows users to explore the bound states in a variety of quantum wells. Users can observe the wave function (both real and imaginary parts), probability density, and magnitude and phase evolve over time for different well shapes for both energy eigenstates and superposition states. Each well can be configured, allowing users to observe how the width and depth can affect the eigenstates and wave functions. Users can also control the particle mass trapped in the wells and observe the influence on the bound states. In addition, simulations are available for molecular bonding in two wells and for examining band structure in up to 10 wells.
The page also contains sample learning goals as well as a teacher's guide for use with the simulation.
This simulation is part of a large and growing collection. It has been designed using principles from physics education research and refined based on student interviews.
