This resource is a set of simple and low-cost lab manuals on the topic of optics, developed for high school and lower-level undergraduate level. The manuals were designed to give beginning students a broad overview of optics and photonics through fun activities that promote real-world applications of the concepts. Resources include labs on pinhole images, spectroscopy, reflection and refraction, and simple lenses. For more advanced students, see the activities on diffraction and polarization of light. Background information is given for each lab, plus diagrams/illustrations and data sheets for student use.
This resource was sponsored by the NSF-funded Photon and Photon2 grants, awarded for the development of introductory curriculum on the topic of optics and light. SEE RELATED MATERIALS on this page for a link to the complete index of curriculum materials.
This resource is part of a Physics Front Topical Unit.
Topic: Nature and Behavior of Light
Unit Title: Behavior of Light If your students think studying optics would be boring, wait until they try building their own spectroscopes and watching light refract through Jello Jigglers. This resource is a set of 16 low-cost lesson/labs designed as an overview of the behavior of light. For the 9th grade physical science class, try the explorations on light spectra, reflection, and refraction. For more advanced students, we suggest the labs on diffraction, polarization, and fluorescence. The lens labs would be appropriate for both. Link to Unit:
