This web site contains a chronological history of optics, including major discoveries, recent innovations, and the people who have made key contributions to the field.  Sections include ancient history, telescopes and microscopes, ray optics, wave optics, electromagnetic waves and quanta, and roots of modern optical systems.

It was developed and maintained by the Electrical Engineering Department of the University of Maryland.
