This page contains a full lab procedural on the topic of Newton's First and Third Laws of motion and force-motion-vector diagrams. Special attention is focused on the "touch-body" diagram of representing motion. The lab, appropriate for high school physics, is intended for use in cooperative learning groups.
Socratic Dialog-Inducing (SDI) Labs are "guided construction" labs featuring hands-on experiments in introductory mechanics. They are carefully designed to promote the Socratic Method of inquiry, in which oppositional viewpoints are openly discussed to stimulate rational thinking. The contradictory view is often presented by a master teacher or, in this case, by the author of the lab manual. The effectiveness of this method in promoting student crossover to the the Newtonian World has been demonstrated by rigorous pre-post testing. SEE RELATED ITEMS BELOW for a link to the full SDI lab collection. Editor's Note: This resource meets multiple standards within Math and English/Language Arts Common Core, as well as AAAS Benchmarks for Science Literacy. It provides a solid vehicle for students to engage in critical response while learning about two key principles in Newtonian mechanics.

Topic: Dynamics: Forces and Motion
Unit Title: Newton's First Law & Inertia This full lab manual encourages critical thinking by using the Socratic Method of inquiry. Students must consider opposing and contradictory views, engage in active dialog about given problems, and defend their own conclusions. This lab covers Newton's First Law (inertia) and Third Law (action/reaction). Link to Unit:
