This item is an introductory tutorial on the topic of lenses.  It explains how lenses are classified according to their curvature and the type of refraction that occurs when light travels through them.  Each classification is supplemented with  drawings that illustrate the focal planes and geometric properties of various types of lenses.  Also included is a Java simulation of lens shape and action.

Unit Title: Microscopy and Optical Devices

This Java-based tutorial introduces students to concave and convex lens characteristics and explains how each type of lens works to produce convergence or divergence of light.  It would be a great warm-up activity before a class lab on lenses and magnification.
