This interactive homework problem for introductory physics introduces frictional forces between a moving cart and a block sitting on top of the cart. Students will apply concepts involving both static and kinetic friction to determine the maximum acceleration of the system so the block will not slip. A user-activated "help" sequence is provided for each step of the problem-solving, including conceptual analysis and a thorough discussion of the properties of both static and kinetic friction. Immediate feedback is received for both correct and incorrect responses.
Editor's Note: We like this problem because it helps students differentiate static from kinetic friction and promotes use of appropriate strategies to approach problem-solving involving frictional forces. Packs a lot of punch! See Related Items for a link to the full collection of interactive problems by the same author.
