Teaching about Energy: Dependence of Elastic Energy on Position
written by
John Roeder
published by the American Association of Physics Teachers
This student activity is designed to explore the potential energy of springs. By hanging different masses on a spring, students are lead to determine the potential energy in a stretched spring. Included are notes for instructors wishing to use this material.
This activity is part of a PTRA manual on Energy.
Book Title:
Teaching about Energy
This resource is part of a Physics Front Topical Unit.
Topic: Periodic and Simple Harmonic Motion
Unit Title: Conservation of Energy and Forces on a Spring In this mass-and-spring lab authored by an AAPT Physics Teacher Resource agent, students deeply explore the potential energy of an elastic system and how it is dependent on the position of the spring. The lesson is offered in both an introductory and an advanced version. It includes reproducible data tables, questions to elicit prior understanding, background information on best-line-fit in a Potential Energy vs. Displacement graph, and problem sets. Link to Unit:
