This is an overview of magnetism and the Earth's magnetic field, written for the 400th anniversary of William Gilbert's book "De Magnete". It includes discussions of electromagnetism, solar magnetism, dynamo theory, ocean floor magnetization, and magnetospheres of Earth and planets. There is also a review of "A Millennium of Geomagnetism" and recommendations for teachers of this material. Spanish, French, and German translations are available.
