Vernier Caliper Model

written by Fu-Kwun Hwang
edited by Loo Kang Wee and Wolfgang Christian

This interactive model shows the principle of operation and the physical parts of a Vernier Caliper, a device used in length measurements to gain accuracy compared to a simple ruler. In this simulation, use the blue slider to move the internal jaws and measure the width of an object; use the green slider to move external jaws to measure the object's internal diameter. The model was developed to help students gain proficiency in use of the Vernier Caliper outside the lab, and to promote understanding of uncertainty and error in measurement.

This model was developed using Easy Java Simulations (EJS) a modeling tool that allows users without formal programming experience to generate computer models and simulations. Teachers may choose to simply run the simulation, or may modify/customize the model by installing the EJS Modeling and Authoring Tool. SEE RELATED MATERIALS for a link to the free authoring tool.
