This item is Part 2 of a two-part experiential learning activity for beginning physics students relating to Newton's Second Law and net force. The problem presents a mock space mission, with students trying to land the spacecraft Galilei on planet Iris. They work cooperatively to calculate the velocity required to maintain a stable orbit at 140 km above the planet's surface. They then determine the thrust necessary to decelerate the spacecraft for smooth landing. Allow two hours
In keeping with Problem-Based Learning (PBL) pedagogy, students will separate useful from irrelevant data, then collaborate to apply physics in finding solutions. This resource includes a printable student manual and a password-protected teacher's guide with solutions and tips for instructors. (Accessing the teacher's guide requires registration with the authors.) SEE RELATED ITEMS ON THIS PAGE for a link to Part 1 of this problem.
