The development and operation of an introductory biophysics course for university life-science students is described. The course combines the features of a standard lecture format with the possibility for the student to elect a self-paced, self-study method of instruction. The educational materials of lecture, modularized study guides, and laboratory are described, as well as the use of diagnostic quizzes and individual instruction. The performance of 1800 students in three semesters is analyzed in terms of their weekly effort and their overall achievement. Finally, the economics of such a flexible system is discussed and speculations are made on possible future improvements.
