This paper describes an approach to classroom experiments in which students adopt roles closer to that of practicing scientists. The authors propose that in the history of physics most "classical" experiments fall into one of three groups: observational experiments, testing theoretical model experiments, or application experiments. Using this framework, the paper suggests methods for experimentation that allow students to be more actively involved in the observation, testing/modeling, and concept application processes.
