Rotational Gimbal Model

written by Fu-Kwun Hwang and Loo Kang Wee

The Gimbal Model illustrates the meaning of pitch, roll and yaw. The independent axis mode allows each axes to be rotated without affecting the others axes. When independent axis mode is not selected, the model can be used to explore the phenomena of gimbal lock.  If the Java 3D option is selected, a aeroplane (in wrl) is rendered inside the gimbal.

The Gimbal Model was developed using the Easy Java Simulations (EJS) modeling tool.  It is distributed as a ready-to-run (compiled) Java archive.   Double clicking the ejs_ntnu_Gimbal.jar file will run the program if Java is installed.  You can modify this simulation if you have EJS installed by right-clicking within the map and selecting "Open Ejs Model" from the pop-up menu item.
