Abstract Title: Leveraging the pandemic moment: revamping a computational astrophysics class
Abstract: The pandemic provided a unique opportunity to reevaluate our existing upper-division astrophysics class. Because this class is an elective for our physics majors, we have the ability to cover fewer topics in order to free up time for instruction on computational techniques and programming. The course was redesigned to center around a scaffolded, 6-week computational project that utilized prerecorded video lectures, synchronous class discussions, and collaborative, student-focused problem solving sessions. Lessons learned from this experience will be presented within the context of broader changes to our curriculum that are being proposed to provided more computational opportunities for math and physics majors.
