Abstract Title: | Computation in the Introductory Physics Course |
---|---|
Abstract: | Integrating computation into the introductory physics course involves many challenges, both pedagogical and political. Most students have no background in computation; there are already too many required topics in the course; many faculty who teach this course are uncomfortable with computation. The possible payoff – empowering students to model complex real-world situations by applying fundamental physical principles – makes it worth persevering in this effort. After more than two decades of effort, however, many questions remain. This talk will focus on setting realistic and appropriate goals, providing a supportive computational environment, appropriate assessment, and identifying important research questions. |
