Problem 17.11: Determine the properties of the standing wave

Please wait for the animation to completely load.

The animation shows a standing wave on a string (position is given in meters and time is given in seconds). Restart.

  1. What is the speed of waves traveling on this string?
  2. Assume you are standing at the point x = 2 m. Sketch the height of the wave at this point as a function of time.
  3. Write an equation for the height of the wave as a function of time at the points x = 0 m and x = 2 m.
  4. Write down a formula for the wave as a function of both distance and time. That is, write a formula for y(x, t).
