Problem 2.18: A tennis ball launcher shoots a red tennis ball into the air

A giant tennis ball launcher shoots a giant red tennis ball straight up into the air. At the instant it leaves the launcher (t = 0 s), a giant green tennis ball is dropped from rest (position is given in meters and time is given in seconds). Restart.

  1. If you want the red ball to return to the launcher at the same instant that the green ball hits the ground, what should the red tennis ball's initial velocity be?
  2. With the initial velocity you calculated in part (a), what would be the maximum height of the red ball shot from the launcher?

Make sure to measure the position of each ball consistently.
