Project: Accessibility and Universal Design in Physics Education: Travel Support for an Invited Speaker
Jacquelyn Chini, Assistant Professor

Diversity, equity, and inclusion are important topics in physics education that continue to receive increased attention within the AAPT and PER communities in the form of changes to AAPT policies, cultural norms, teaching strategies, and research foci. Despite this increased attention, issues related to disability, accessibility, and universal design in physics education have received relatively little attention. To increase awareness about these issues within the PER community, our group will propose a PERC 2017 session on "Accessibility and Universal Design in Physics Education." One underlying goal of this session will be to value research-based insights and the lived experiences of people with disabilities in equal measure. To that end, one of the speakers will be an undergraduate physics student who has been blind since birth and has co-founded a science education initiative for other blind students. This proposal seeks funds to defray costs associated with her travel to PERC 2017.

Project:Race and Gender Performance Gaps: Travel Support for Invited Speakers
Dimitri Dounas-Frazer,  Research Associate

At SM16, RiPE and CoTP agreed to co-sponsor an invited panel session called "Race and Gender Performance Gaps: Problems and Alternatives," to be held at SM17. The panel will focus on problems with, affordances of, and alternatives to the practice of computing performance gaps as a means of studying the educational experiences of students from marginalized groups in physics. This proposal seeks travel support for Katemari Rosa, an expert education researcher who uses Critical Race Theory to perform qualitative analyses of factors that contribute to the success of Black women in physics. Rosa has agreed to be an invited panelist in the "Performance Gaps" session at SM17.

Coping Mechanisms for Physics Students from Underrepresented Groups: Support for Invited Panelists
Simone Hyater-Adams, Research Associate

The Committee on Diversity in Physics and the Committee on International Physics Education agreed to co-sponsor an invited panel session called "Coping Mechanisms for Physics Students in Underrepresented Groups" at the 2017 AAPT Summer Meeting.T his session will address the unique issues that marginalized students in physics must negotiate on their paths, as well as how departments and students can offer support. The session will include informational framing on the issues, a panel of students who can tell their stories about their experiences, as well as discussion amongst panelists and attendees about ways to combat these hurdles. This proposal seeks support for Kali Johnson and Alexis Papak, two out of the four invited student panelists, who will not have support otherwise to get to the conference.

Support Dr. Antje Kohnle as a plenary speaker at FFPER 2017
Paula Heron, Professor

The purpose of this award is to support Dr. Antje Kohnle of the University of St. Andrews, in accepting our invitation to be a plenary speaker at the 2017 Foundations and Frontiers of Physics Education Research (FFPER) Conference. Dr. Kohnle is a distinguished speaker who will travel from Europe for the conference.
