Abstract Title: Determining Influences of Women Deciding to Major in Physics
Abstract: It is well documented that women are underrepresented in the fields of physics and astronomy. One problem is the recruitment of women into STEM fields. Determining what factors drive women to pursue degrees in physics can inform how we engage women in physics and other STEM fields. We examine a dataset collected from the 2015-2016 APS Conferences for Undergraduate Women in Physics (CUWiP). Attendees filled out a pre-conference survey including a question asking about the path and influences that led them to choose physics as a course of study. Preliminary results show a strong dependence on people, such as parents, teachers, and professors, as well as early interest in space and astronomy over other fields of physics.
