Abstract Title: Facilitators and outcomes of three STEM-Education conference groups working toward transdisciplinarity
Abstract: There is a growing societal recognition of the need for transdisciplinary scientific collaboration which can enhance undergraduate physics, science, and engineering education. A regional conference/network (Breaking Boundaries in STEM-Education Research) was established in 2016 with 100 university education researchers in physics and other STEM fields. Groups were formed to address three themes (problem-solving, computational thinking, and equity) with multiple goals including to strive for transdisciplinary publications of innovations in education.  Surveys and behavioral observations were completed at the conference, and phone interviews were conducted 3-4 months later.  One year later, the outcomes (publications) were analyzed.  While the lofty goal of transdisciplinarity proved difficult to achieve, several multidisciplinary publications emerged. Results indicated that multiple factors (prior working history, narrow scope of disciplines) were likely associated with collaborative readiness and ability to generate outcomes (e.g., publications) in a rapid and smooth-running manner.
