Abstract Title: The Intersection of Physics and Computing Identities: Examining boundary spanning amongst marginalized groups in physics
Abstract: As we look towards the future of physics educations, technology and computing are becoming increasingly important facets of student learning as well as physics as a discipline. However, both physics and computing disciplines suffer from the under-representation o women, Hispanic students, and black students. In this paper, we examine the intersection of physics and computing identities for students in introductory physics courses, with particular attention to students who are marginalized in physics. We draw on survey data (n=1704) from a stratified random sample of intro physics courses at colleges and universities across the country, including data from both physics and computing identity using measures previously found to be valid and reliable. The results indicate that only certain students construct intersecting physics and computing identities implying that we need to better understand how we integrate these disciplines in ways that do not further marginalize students who are already marginalized.
