The Phase and Group Velocity Comparison model shows the time evolution of a wave packet. Wave packets occur in various fields, including quantum mechanics, signal processing, and optics. It is created by superimposing waves of different frequencies, resulting in a localized envelope shaping the wave. The phase velocity, v, refers to the speed at which a specific point, such as a peak or a trough, travels. The group velocity, u, refers to the speed at which the overall envelope of a wave packet, travels. If all the waves of different frequencies travel at the same speed, the phase and group velocities are the same. However, if the wave's speed depends on its frequency (dispersion), the phase and group velocities will differ.
